All 32 of these are free from chicken, beef, dairy, wheat and lamb. Tap to narrow it down further

Is there anything else your dog cannot have?

Tap as many as you like. The treats below will narrow to match.

Worth knowing: chicken and turkey are both poultry, and beef and buffalo are both bovine. If one of a pair is a problem the other may be too, so tap both if you would rather be careful.

Hypoallergenic has no legal definition for dog treats and nothing is allergen free for every dog. What we can tell you is exactly which animal is in each bag. Introduce anything new on its own and leave several days before the next, or a reaction tells you nothing. Always follow your vet's advice on what your dog can have.

Which animal is in each chew, and how novel?

Our own figures for this range

Hypoallergenic has no legal definition for dog treats, so on its own the word is worth nothing. What actually matters is which animal is in the bag and how often UK dogs meet it, because a protein only becomes a trigger through exposure. Here is every treat on this page, the animal it comes from, how many ingredients are in it and an honest word on how novel that animal really is. Most novel first.

Novel means almost no UK dog food uses that animal, so most dogs have never met it. Widely fed means a clean break from chicken and beef, but plenty of food already uses it. Poultry family and Beef family mean a different animal that is related to one of the two we leave out, turkey to chicken and buffalo to beef, so give those a slower trial. Not a meat is exactly that. The ingredients column is how many things are in the bag, counted from the declared percentages on the label.

Novel means an animal your dog's immune system has not met often enough to react to. The most commonly reported triggers in dogs are beef, dairy, chicken, wheat and lamb, and they top that list largely because they are what dogs are fed most, not because there is anything special about them. That is why rabbit and venison work so well, and it is why we flag the turkey and the buffalo in the table above rather than quietly leaving them off it. Nothing is allergen free for every dog, and hypo means less likely, never none.

What every treat on this page leaves out

All 32 are chicken free and beef free, with no wheat, no grain, no dairy and no additives. 28 of the 32 are a single ingredient and nothing else, and 11 are a genuinely novel protein.

We also flag the 10 that come from an animal related to one we leave out, rather than hiding them. You can see which in the table above.

Figures last checked 5 October 2026. Natural treats vary a little from batch to batch. Always follow your vet's advice on what your dog can have.

Questions we get asked

The ones that come up most about this range

What treats can I give a dog with allergies?

One with a single protein your dog has not had much of before, and nothing else in the bag. That is what this page is: 32 treats and chews, every one free from chicken, beef, wheat, dairy and lamb, and 28 of them a single ingredient and nothing else. Which one suits depends on what your dog has already reacted to, and the finder at the top of this page will narrow it down for you in a couple of taps.

What dog chews are hypoallergenic?

The ones made of a single novel meat and nothing else. On this page that means rabbit ears, buffalo horn, braided collagen, ostrich bone, deer leg, goat ears, duck necks, duck feet and cod skin braids, among others. A long lasting chew is usually easier than a soft treat for a dog on an elimination trial, because there is one ingredient and it takes a while, so you are not handing out several different things across a day.

What does hypoallergenic actually mean?

Less than you would hope. There is no legal definition for dog treats, and no ingredient is allergen free for every dog. Hypo means less likely, not none. What it means in practice is a single protein, no grain, no additives, and usually a meat your dog has not eaten much of before. That last part does most of the work.

What is a novel protein?

One your dog's immune system has not met often enough to react to. Rabbit, venison, kangaroo, ostrich, goat and camel are novel for most UK dogs because very little commercial food uses them. The reason beef and chicken top every list of triggers is mostly that they are what dogs get fed most. It is the exposure that creates the problem, not anything special about the meat.

Why are there no beef or chicken treats on this page?

Because they are the two most commonly reported triggers in dogs, along with dairy, wheat and lamb. We sell plenty of beef and it is some of the best stock we carry, but it does not belong on a page for dogs that react to things. We took it off this collection in October 2026. You will not find anything here with a dozen ingredients calling itself hypoallergenic either, and we do not sell prescription or hydrolysed treats, because those are a formulated product and we are not a formulator.

My dog reacts to chicken. Is turkey safe?

Often, but it is not a clean break and we would rather say so. Both are poultry and some dogs react to both. If you want certainty, move to a different animal entirely: rabbit, venison, goat or fish.

You sell buffalo. Is that not just beef?

Not the same animal, but the same family, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. If your dog reacts to beef there is a fair chance buffalo will not suit either. Plenty of beef sensitive dogs do perfectly well on it. We would just rather you went in knowing.

Is duck hypoallergenic?

Duck is a genuinely different protein from chicken, so it is the swap we suggest most often and it works for most dogs. It is not novel in the way rabbit is, because plenty of foods use it, but it is a sensible first step.

Are these the same as prescription hypoallergenic treats?

No, and they go about it from opposite directions. A prescription treat is formulated, which usually means the protein has been broken down so the immune system is less likely to recognise it. Ours are not formulated at all, because there is only one thing in the bag. Neither approach is the right one for every dog, and if your vet has put your dog on a prescription diet then that is their call to change, not ours. If your vet has said single novel protein, this is what that looks like.

How should I introduce a new protein?

One at a time, a small amount, then wait five days before anything else new. Introducing two together tells you nothing if there is a reaction, and you end up ruling out both.

Which would you start with, if I have no idea what sets him off?

A rabbit ear, usually. Single ingredient, genuinely novel, cheap enough to test without committing, and most dogs take to it straight away. Worth knowing it is richer than people assume at 21.5% fat, so it is a treat rather than a daily habit. If you want a whole order to work through, this is the one we give people at the market: rabbit first, then goat, then venison, then camel. Four different animals, one ingredient each, cheapest first, and five clear days between each one. Get through all four without trouble and you have found four proteins your dog is fine with, which is a far better place to be than where you started.

This is where our business started

Rory reacted to almost everything on the shelves as a puppy, and finding things he could actually have is the reason Wag and Whistle exists at all. If you are at that stage, email us and tell us what your dog cannot have. We answer every message ourselves.
