Our Pure Meat Sticks are as close to just meat as a stick can get, and they are small enough to keep a pocketful for walks. Choose kangaroo, venison, rabbit or ostrich.

Why they matter to us

All four are novel proteins, meaning most dogs have never eaten them. For a dog who reacts to beef, chicken or pork, that is the whole point. We started Wag & Whistle because our Rory could not tolerate anything on the shelves, so a single-protein treat is not a marketing line here, it is the reason we do this.

Key features

  • Around 7g a stick. As a natural product, sizes vary.
  • 97% meat, 3% tapioca. The tapioca comes from cassava root and simply holds the stick together. No additives, no preservatives, no grain or gluten.
  • Single protein. Kangaroo, venison, rabbit and ostrich are all uncommon enough that most dogs have no history with them.
  • High in protein. From 47.2% in the rabbit up to 74.2% in the ostrich.
  • Ostrich is the leanest. At 5.8% fat, ostrich is the pick for a dog watching their weight. Rabbit is 8.5%, kangaroo 11% and venison 13.8%.
  • Easy to break up. Snap into smaller pieces for training, or hand over whole.

Worth knowing

These are quick, tasty treats rather than long chews. For something to keep them busy for an afternoon, try a Buffalo Horn or a Jumbo Paddywack.

What is a novel protein and why does it matter?

A protein your dog has almost certainly never eaten. Food sensitivities build up over time through repeated exposure, which is why beef and chicken cause so much trouble, they are in everything. Kangaroo, venison, rabbit and ostrich are not, so there is nothing for your dog to have reacted to.

Which one should I pick?

If you have no particular reason to choose, try the Mixed Meat Medley first and see which your dog goes for. It has all four in one bag and works out cheaper than guessing wrong.

Are they good for training?

Yes. Snap one into smaller pieces and you have several high-value rewards. Being single protein, they also suit a dog on an elimination diet where most training treats are off limits.

How long does one last?

Minutes. These are treats rather than chews. If you want something that occupies a dog, a buffalo horn or a paddywack is what you are after.

Feeding Instructions +
Use as a reward during training, alongside your dog's usual diet rather than on top of it. Treats should make up no more than a tenth of what they eat in a day. Reseal the pouch after opening and keep it somewhere cool and dry. Always leave fresh water available.
