How long does each chew actually last?

Our own figures for this range

Every shop stocks long lasting dog chews and almost none of them will tell you how long one actually lasts. We have watched these go with our own dogs, so here is the honest answer for every chew on this page, by the size of the dog, longest first. They are ranges rather than promises, because a determined chewer and a gentle one will not treat the same chew the same way.

Toughness is the same 1 to 5 chew strength rating you will find on every product page: medium is a chew most dogs work through, tough needs a proper chewer, and power chewer is gnawed down over weeks rather than eaten. Small is a dog up to 8kg, medium is 8 to 20kg, large is 20kg and over. Every chew wants supervision and fresh water, whatever the size of the dog.

Nobody can promise you an exact number of hours, because a determined Staffie and a half-hearted Labrador will not treat the same chew the same way. What we can do is tell you what we have seen, by size, and let you judge. These figures come from our own dogs and from what customers tell us lasted, and we would rather quote you the short end and be wrong in your favour. If a chew goes far quicker than it says here, tell us and we will change the figure.

What dog chews last the longest

Of the 16 chews on this page, 8 last a medium dog a week or more and 8 last a small dog a month or more. The longest lasting chew in our range is the Buffalo Horn, at 6 to 9 months for a small dog. 10 are rated tough or power chewer, which is the end of the range to start at for an aggressive chewer.

Nothing here is rawhide, and nothing here is formed, moulded or glued back together. They are single ingredients, air-dried, and they last because of what they are rather than because of what was added to them.

Restocking the treat drawer rather than hunting for one long chew? The Demolisher is a bag of 100 quick treats, so about three months of a treat a day for one dog, or six to ten weeks in a two dog house. It is not in the table above, because the bag is what lasts rather than any one thing in it.

The ones that come up most about this range

Which chew lasts the longest?

A buffalo horn, by a distance. Two to four months for a large dog, six to nine for a small one, given in sessions rather than left down. At the price, nothing else in our range comes close on cost per hour of chewing.

What can I give my dog to chew on for hours?

For a large dog, a horn, a yak bar, a calf hoof or an ostrich bone. A braided tendon will give you a few hours. The paddywack, the pizzle, the beef tail and the cow ear are the short ones at that size, ten to twenty minutes, and we would rather say so than let you buy one expecting an afternoon. If you want to stretch a shorter chew, stuff a hollow one with pate and freeze it.

Will a hard chew break my dog's teeth?

It depends on the dog, and we would rather say that than give you a clean yes or no. A dog who gnaws steadily at a horn or a hoof can have one for months without any trouble at all. A dog who bites down hard to crack things open can fracture a tooth, usually one of the big ones at the back, and that means a vet trip. It is not common, but it is not rare enough for any shop to tell you it cannot happen. Sit with your dog for the first few minutes of a new hard chew: steady gnawing and scraping is what you want to see, trying to crush it in one go is not. If they are a crusher, pick from the softer end of this page instead.

What if my dog is a cruncher rather than a gnawer?

Then skip the hard ones. A paddywack, a braided tendon or a buffalo wrap gives you a long chew with nothing in it hard enough to crack a tooth. You lose a few of the hours a horn would have given you, and you lose the risk along with them, which for a crusher is the right way round.

What are the best long lasting chews for big dogs?

Size up, always. Look at the large dog column and you will see how quickly some of these go. For a Labrador we would start with a buffalo horn and pick the biggest one you can. The chew should be too big to fit between their back teeth, which is both what keeps them gnawing and what keeps their teeth intact.

Is any of this rawhide?

No, and it will not be. Rawhide is a by-product of the leather trade, often chemically treated, and it swells in the stomach rather than breaking down. Everything here digests properly. If you want the closest thing to rawhide without the problems, a buffalo wrap is what you are after.

Which are lean enough for a dog on a diet?

Buffalo horn at 1.6% fat, calf hoof at 4% and yak bar at 5.2% are the lean end. The braided collagen at 25.5% and the ostrich bone at 17.2% are not. If your dog needs to lose a bit, the horn is the obvious pick: it is the leanest thing here and it lasts the longest.
