These assume a chew that comes out for a session and goes back in the cupboard, rather than one left down all day. Every dog is different, so treat them as honest ranges rather than promises. The ones that come up most about this range

Which chew lasts the longest?

A buffalo horn or an antler, and there is not much between them. Two to four months for a large dog, six to nine for a small one, given in sessions rather than left down. At the price, nothing else we sell comes close on cost per hour of chewing.

What can I give my dog to chew on for hours?

For a large dog, a horn, an antler, a yak bar, a calf hoof or an ostrich bone. A braided tendon will give you a few hours. The paddywack, the pizzle, the beef tail and the cow ear are the short ones at that size, ten to twenty minutes, and we would rather say so than let you buy one expecting an afternoon. If you want to stretch a shorter chew, stuff a hollow one with pate and freeze it.

What if my dog is a cruncher rather than a gnawer?

Then skip the hard ones. A dog who bites down to crush rather than working steadily at something can fracture a tooth on a horn, an antler, a hoof or a yak bar. It is not common but it happens, and no shop should tell you otherwise. A paddywack, a braided tendon or a buffalo wrap gives a long chew with nothing hard in it.

What are the best long lasting chews for big dogs?

Size up, always. Look at the large dog column and you will see how quickly some of these go. For a Labrador we would start with a buffalo horn and pick the biggest one you can. The chew should be too big to fit between their back teeth, which is both what keeps them gnawing and what keeps their teeth intact.

Is any of this rawhide?

No, and we will not sell it. Rawhide is a by-product of the leather trade, often chemically treated, and it swells in the stomach rather than breaking down. Everything here digests properly. If you want the closest thing to rawhide without the problems, a buffalo wrap is what you are after.

Which are lean enough for a dog on a diet?

Buffalo horn at 1.6% fat, antler at 0.1%, calf hoof at 4% and yak bar at 5.2% are the lean end. The braided collagen at 25.5% and the ostrich bone at 17.2% are not. If your dog needs to lose a bit, the horn is the obvious pick: it is the leanest thing here and it lasts the longest.
