Description

Chicken FreeDental HealthHigh ProteinLong LastingLow Fat

A hard, long lasting milk chew with real mango in it. The sweetest smelling of our three flavoured bars, which helps if you have a dog who needs persuading to settle with a chew in the first place.

Key features

  • Medium, around 70g. Suits a dog of roughly 10 to 20kg. As a natural product, sizes vary a little.
  • 90.9% cow's milk, 9% mango. Real fruit, not flavouring. Most mango chews on the market are made with mango flavouring, so it is worth reading the ingredients when you compare.
  • Made the way a yak bar is made. Milk pressed and dried into a hard cheese, the traditional Himalayan method. The difference is the milk: this one is cow, our plain bars are yak.
  • High protein and low fat. 58% protein and 5% fat, so it sits comfortably in our low fat range.
  • One of the longest lasting chews in our range. It is meant to be softened gradually by chewing rather than cracked.
  • Nothing goes in the bin. Microwave the last stub and it puffs up like a marshmallow.
  • Chicken free and grain free.

Worth knowing

This is cow's milk, and we would rather say so plainly than let the shape of the bar imply otherwise. Cow's milk is one of the more common things dogs react to. The pressing and drying takes most of the lactose out, which is why these suit a lot of dogs who cannot manage ordinary dairy, but not all of them. If yours has had trouble with cow's milk before, the plain Himalayan Yak Chews are 100% yak milk and worth trying instead.

It is also a hard chew, among the harder things on the market. A dog who bites down to crush things, or one who has had dental work, is better off with something from our soft treats.

Suitable for puppies from 12 weeks for medium and large breeds. For a small breed we would wait until six months, once the adult teeth are properly through.

Please supervise your dog while they enjoy this treat, and make sure fresh water is always available. As a natural product, sizes may vary slightly.

Fancy a different one? There is a Blueberry Milk Chew, the mildest of the three, and a Cranberry Milk Chew, the sharpest. Same size, same price.

Questions We Get Asked +

Is this a yak bar?

No, and we would rather be straight about it. It is made exactly the way a Himalayan yak bar is made, milk pressed and dried into a very hard cheese, but the milk is cow rather than yak. Our plain bars are the yak ones.

Is it real mango?

Yes. It is 9% mango, not flavouring. The rest is 90.9% cow's milk and a trace of salt and lime juice.

My dog does not get on with dairy. Can they have one?

Possibly, but go carefully. The pressing and drying removes most of the lactose, which is why these suit a lot of dogs who cannot manage ordinary milk. Cow's milk is still a common trigger though. Introduce it slowly and stop if it disagrees. A dog who reacts to cow's milk sometimes does better on the plain yak bars.

What is the microwave thing?

When it wears down to a stub too small to chew safely, microwave the piece on full power for 30 to 60 seconds and it puffs up like a marshmallow. Let it cool for at least five minutes, because the centre comes out well above 80 degrees. Check it against your wrist first. It means nothing goes in the bin, and dogs love it.

When should I take it away?

Once it is small enough to swallow whole, which is roughly when it will sit flat on your thumbnail. That is the moment to microwave it rather than hand it back.

Is it too hard for their teeth?

It is a hard chew, among the harder things on the market, and it is meant to be softened gradually by chewing rather than cracked. A dog who bites down to crush things, or one who has had dental work, is better off with something softer.

What age can a dog start?

From 12 weeks for a medium or large breed puppy, with you watching. For a small breed we would wait until six months, once the adult teeth are properly through, because this is hard and a small mouth will struggle to do anything with it but bite.

Give under supervision and always with fresh water nearby. Take the chew away once it has been worn down small enough to swallow, and let your dog rest between sessions rather than leaving it down all day. As a natural product, size, shape and colour vary from one to the next.
