Himalayan Yak Chews

Think of it as the world's toughest cheese. Our Himalayan Yak Chews are made from 100% yak milk, pressed into a hard bar that your dog has to work at properly, and one lasts a very long time.

Which size for which dog?

Go by the dog, not by how long you want it to last. A bar that is too big is harder for a small dog to hold and work at.

• Small, 30g. Under 10kg. Jack Russell, Yorkshire Terrier, Chihuahua, Pug.
• Medium, 66 to 74g. 10 to 20kg. Cocker Spaniel, Border Collie, Staffie, Beagle.
• Large, 116 to 130g. 20 to 30kg. Labrador, Golden Retriever, Boxer.
• Extra Large, 191 to 200g. Over 30kg. German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Bernese, Mastiff.

As a natural product each bar varies a little, which is why those are ranges rather than one tidy number.

The microwave trick

When the bar wears down to a stub too small to chew safely, microwave the piece on full power for 30 to 60 seconds and it puffs up like a marshmallow. Let it cool for at least five minutes before offering it, as the centre comes out well above 80 degrees and will burn a dog's mouth. Check it against your wrist first.

Take the bar away once it is small enough to swallow whole, which is roughly when it will sit flat on your thumbnail. That is the point to microwave it rather than hand it back.

A word on how hard it is

Yak chews are among the harder things on the market, and that is the whole point of them. It also means they are not for every dog. If yours bites down to crack things rather than working away at them, or has had dental work, pick something softer from our soft treats. It softens as they chew, but it starts hard.

Worth knowing

Pop away any small pieces that break off. Yak milk is naturally very low in lactose once it has been pressed and dried this way, which is why plenty of dogs who cannot manage ordinary dairy get on with it fine. Introduce it slowly and stop if it disagrees with them. For an even longer chew, try the Buffalo Horn.

Suitable for medium and large breed puppies from 12 weeks, with supervision. For small breeds, wait until six months.
