Think of it as the world's toughest cheese. Our Yak Bar is made from 100% Himalayan yak milk, pressed into a hard bar that your dog has to work at properly, and it lasts a very long time.

The microwave trick

When the bar wears down to a stub too small to chew safely, microwave the piece on full power for 30 to 60 seconds and it puffs up like a marshmallow. Let it cool for at least five minutes before offering it, as the centre comes out well above 80 degrees and will burn a dog's mouth. Check it against your wrist first.

Worth knowing

Pop away any small pieces that break off, and when it gets down to a stub, that is the time for the microwave trick. For an even longer chew, try the Antler XL.

Suitable for medium and large breed puppies from 12 weeks, with supervision. For small breeds, wait until six months.

What is a yak bar made of?

Yak milk, hardened into a bar. It is a traditional Himalayan cheese, made the same way for centuries, and it happens to be one of the longest-lasting chews you can give a dog.

My dog is lactose intolerant. Can they have one?

The hardening process removes most of the lactose, which is why these suit a lot of dogs who cannot manage ordinary dairy. Most, not all. Introduce it slowly and stop if it disagrees with them.

What is the microwave thing?

When it wears down to a stub too small to chew safely, microwave the piece for up to a minute and it puffs up like a marshmallow. Let it cool properly, then hand it over. It means nothing goes in the bin, and dogs love it.

Is it too hard for their teeth?

It is a hard chew, so the same caution applies as with a horn or an antler. It is meant to be softened gradually by chewing rather than cracked. A dog who bites down to crush things is better off with something softer.

How long does one last?

A long time, and that is the appeal. Take any small pieces that break off away promptly, and put it back in the cupboard between sessions so it keeps its novelty.

What age can a dog start?

It depends on the size of the dog. A medium or large breed puppy can have one from 12 weeks, with you watching. For a small breed we would wait until six months, once the adult teeth are properly through, because a yak bar is hard and a small mouth will struggle to do anything with it but bite.
