Our Buffalo Horn is one of the longest lasting chews we sell, and one of the most useful. It is a single natural ingredient with nothing added, and it wears down slowly over months rather than vanishing in an evening. Your sofa cushions will thank you.

Getting the most from it

Don't leave it lying about. Give it to your dog for an hour, then wash it, dry it and put it back in the cupboard. The horn keeps its novelty for months instead of ending up under the sofa, and it stays fresh: horns only smell while they're being chewed, as saliva rehydrates the surface.

Worth knowing

Horn is a hard chew, so it suits a steady gnawer aged 6 months and over. If your dog likes to bite down hard, the Yak Bar softens as they chew.

Is it okay for dogs to chew buffalo horn?

For most dogs, yes, with one honest caveat. Horn is hard, and any hard chew carries some risk of a cracked tooth, particularly with a dog who bites down to crush rather than gnawing steadily. Watch how yours goes at it the first time. If they try to crush it, this is not the chew for them.

Do buffalo horns splinter?

No. Horn is keratin, the same material as your own fingernails, so it wears down gradually rather than breaking apart the way a bone does. It just slowly gets smaller. Take it away once it is small enough to swallow.

What age can a puppy have one?

Six months, and we will not budge on this one. You will see horns sold as suitable from eight weeks or four months. We think that is too young. A puppy's adult teeth are still coming through, and this is the hardest thing we sell.

How long does one actually last?

Three to six months, not one sitting. It is a horn that comes out regularly and slowly wears down. Anyone promising hours of engagement is underselling it. Give it for an hour, then wash it, dry it and put it away, and it keeps its novelty for months.

Do they smell?

Barely. A dry horn in the cupboard smells of nothing. They only develop a smell while being chewed, because saliva rehydrates the surface, and it goes again once it dries.
