Buffalo Horn

Our Water Buffalo Horn is one of the longest lasting chews in our range, and one of the most useful. A single natural ingredient with nothing added, it wears down slowly over months rather than vanishing in an evening. Your sofa cushions will thank you.

Key features

• Around 220g a horn. As a natural product, sizes vary.
• One ingredient. Water buffalo horn. No additives, no preservatives.
• Hollow end and solid core. Stuff the hollow end, and the solid core is what makes it last.
• Lasts three to six months. It wears down gradually, which makes it ideal for dogs who get through everything else.
• Very lean. 91.4% protein, the highest of anything in our range, and just 1.6% fat, which puts it in our low fat range.
• Low odour. A dry horn in the cupboard smells of nothing at all.

Hollow end or solid core?

Every horn has both, which is the bit people usually want explained. The wide end is hollow, and that is what you stuff. Fill it with our Turkey or Duck Pate and freeze it to make it last even longer. Further down it becomes the solid core, the dense part that takes months to wear through. So there is no choosing between a hollow one and a solid one, you get both in every horn.

One size, and it is a medium

We stock the medium, around 220g, and that is deliberate rather than a gap. It suits most dogs from a Cocker Spaniel upwards and it is big enough that it cannot be swallowed. If you are specifically after an extra large horn, we do not do one, and we would rather tell you now than take the order.

Getting the most from it

Don't leave it lying about. Give it to your dog for an hour, then wash it, dry it and put it back in the cupboard. The horn keeps its novelty for months instead of ending up under the sofa, and it stays fresh: horns only smell while they're being chewed, as saliva rehydrates the surface.

Is it safe?

Yes for most dogs, with one caveat we would rather say out loud. Horn is hard. Any hard chew carries some risk of a cracked tooth, and the dogs at risk are the ones who bite down to crush rather than gnawing steadily away. Watch your dog with the first one. A steady gnawer is fine. A crusher is not, and for them the Himalayan Yak Chews soften as they chew.

What horn does not do is splinter. It is keratin, the same material as your fingernails, so it wears down gradually instead of breaking apart the way a bone can. Take it away once it is small enough to swallow.

Worth knowing

Suitable for dogs from 6 months, with supervision. We will not budge on that age, even though you will see horns sold as suitable from eight weeks. A puppy's adult teeth are still coming through and this is the hardest chew in our range.

Please supervise your dog while they enjoy this treat, and make sure fresh water is always available. As a natural product, sizes may vary slightly.
