Soft covers a lot of ground, and the difference matters more than it sounds. A pâté needs no teeth at all. A training treat goes down whole. A puffed snout is light in the hand and still has to be crunched. If your dog has lost teeth, or is just getting on, that is the distinction you need before you buy, so here is every treat on this page sorted by how much chewing it actually takes, gentlest first.

No teeth needed means it can be eaten off a spoon or mashed with the tongue. Gums can manage it means it can be swallowed or worked through without being bitten apart, which is the band most dogs with teeth missing do best on. Needs some teeth means it is soft for a chew and still has to be chewed, and that includes everything puffed, because puffing makes a treat light rather than soft. Boxes, crackers and the pick n mix are left out, because what is in them varies and one answer would not be true of all of it.
These ratings come from handling the products rather than from a supplier sheet, and they are a guide rather than a promise, because a dog with four good teeth and a dog with none are not the same dog. If your dog is having real trouble eating, that is worth a word with your vet before it is worth a word with us. Anything in the last band can usually be softened in a little warm water, and if something turns out to be harder going than it says here, tell us and we will move it.
Soft treats for a dog with no teeth
Of the 17 treats rated on this page, 2 need no teeth at all and a further 7 are soft enough for gums. That is 9 to choose from before you get to anything that has to be chewed. The gentlest of the lot is the Duck Pate 400g.
Everything here is a single ingredient, air-dried, with nothing artificial in it. Soft, in our range, means the treat itself is soft, not that it has been softened with glycerine or sugar to make it bend.
Always supervise your dog, and take anything away once it is small enough to swallow whole.
