Training Treats

Training treats for dogs that are small enough to pocket by the handful and worth working for. Single protein, nothing formed, and the fat figure on every one.

Which reward for which job? Our own figures for this range

A training treat has one job: be gone in a second and be worth having. Here is what each one is like in the hand and what it costs you in fat over a long session.

The ready-made training treats are the most convenient and the richest. For a long session, break up a tripe stick or a piece of biltong instead: same job, a fraction of the fat, and tripe is the one most dogs will work hardest for.

Questions we get asked

The ones that come up most about this range

What makes a good training treat?

Small, quick to eat and worth having. If your dog has to stop and chew, the moment has gone and so has their attention. Anything you can break into pea-sized pieces will do the job.

What counts as a high value treat?

Whatever your dog will work hardest for, and it is not the same for every dog. Tripe is the usual answer because it smells strongest. Save the high value ones for recall and distractions, and use something plainer for practice in the kitchen.

Does the fat matter if the pieces are tiny?

Less than you would think, but it adds up over a long session. Our duck and venison training treats are 31.8% fat, which is fine for a handful and not fine for an hour of practice. If you are doing a lot, use tripe at 6.9% or biltong at 4.3%.

Can I use these for a puppy?

Yes, from 12 weeks, in small pieces. Training treats are one of the better ways to introduce a new protein, because the quantity is so small that a reaction stays mild if there is one.

What about a dog with allergies?

The ostrich, rabbit, kangaroo and venison sticks are single novel proteins, which makes them a good choice for a dog who reacts to the usual meats. The sweet potato slices are the only vegetarian option we do.

How many is too many?

Count them into the day's food and take the equivalent off dinner. A long session can easily hit a tenth of a small dog's daily intake without anyone noticing, which is the usual explanation for a dog who quietly gains weight over a training course.
