Is kangaroo good for dogs?
It is lean, high in protein and about as unfamiliar as a meat gets in this country, which is the whole reason to bother with it. Almost no UK dog has eaten kangaroo, so it is a sensible thing to try when beef, chicken and pork have all been ruled out.
Is kangaroo hypoallergenic?
No meat is hypoallergenic in itself, and anyone telling you otherwise is overselling. What kangaroo is, is novel, and that is the useful property. A dog cannot react to something it has never been exposed to, which is why novel proteins are where people end up when they are working through a list.
Is kangaroo lean?
Our kangaroo meat stick is 11% fat and 97% meat, which puts it under our 14% low fat line. Among the novel meats it sits in the middle: our ostrich stick is leaner at 5.8% and the venison one is richer at 13.8%.
Why are there only two kangaroo products?
Because those are the two we are happy with. Kangaroo is expensive to source well and we would rather stock a small honest range than pad it out with things we are lukewarm about. If kangaroo suits your dog and you want more variety, ostrich and rabbit are the nearest neighbours.
Can I use kangaroo for training?
Yes, and it is one of the better options if your dog is on a restricted diet. The meat stick snaps into pieces, so you choose the size of the reward, and at 11% fat a long session does not add up the way a richer treat would.
Is the Mixed Meat Medley any use for an elimination diet?
No, and it is worth being blunt about it. The medley is several proteins in one bag, which makes it excellent for finding out what your dog likes and completely useless for ruling anything out. If you are eliminating, buy the single kangaroo stick instead.
