How do I stuff one?

Spoon our turkey or duck pate into the hollow section, push it down, and freeze it for a few hours. A chew that would have been over in twenty minutes then keeps them busy for far longer. It is the single most useful thing you can do with one.

Does it splinter?

Hoof is keratin, the same material as fingernails, so it wears down rather than shattering. Pieces can flake off as it gets thinner though, so take it away once it is small or if you spot a sharp edge.

Is it too hard?

It is a firm chew and belongs in the same category as horns and antlers. Watch how your dog goes at it the first time. Steady gnawing is what you want. A dog who tries to crush things is better suited to a paddywack or a braided tendon.

Does it smell?

Very little when dry. Like a horn, it only develops a smell while it is being chewed, because saliva rehydrates the surface.

What age can a dog start?

From 12 weeks, whatever the size of your dog. A hoof wears down gradually rather than shattering, and its size and shape give a puppy something to hold down and gnaw at rather than swallow.

Stuffing and freezing it is the better way in for a younger dog, because it gives them something to work at that is not the hoof itself. Sit with them for the first one.
