Are cow hooves safe for dogs?

It depends on how your dog chews, and we would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise. A hoof is a hard chew, and a determined cruncher can crack pieces off one. That makes it a good match for a steady gnawer and a poor one for a dog who bites down to break things. If yours is a cruncher, the Buffalo Wrap is far softer and does the same job. Whichever you go for, stay with them while they chew and take it away once it is worn down small enough to swallow.

Do cow hooves smell?

A bit, yes, once your dog gets going on one. We would rather warn you than have you find out on the sofa, which is why we say these are best enjoyed in the garden.

Worth knowing

Stuff it and freeze it and one hoof will keep a dog busy for a great deal longer than an empty one will.

How do I stuff one?

Spoon our turkey or duck pate into the hollow section, push it down, and freeze it for a few hours. A chew that would have been over in twenty minutes then keeps them busy for far longer. It is the single most useful thing you can do with one.

Does it splinter?

Hoof is keratin, the same material as fingernails, so it wears down rather than shattering. Pieces can flake off as it gets thinner though, so take it away once it is small or if you spot a sharp edge.

Is it too hard?

It is a firm chew and belongs in the same category as horns and antlers. Watch how your dog goes at it the first time. Steady gnawing is what you want. A dog who tries to crush things is better suited to a paddywack or a braided tendon.

Does it smell?

Very little when dry. Like a horn, it only develops a smell while it is being chewed, because saliva rehydrates the surface.

What age can a dog start?

From 12 weeks, whatever the size of your dog. A hoof wears down gradually rather than shattering, and its size and shape give a puppy something to hold down and gnaw at rather than swallow.

Stuffing and freezing it is the better way in for a younger dog, because it gives them something to work at that is not the hoof itself. Sit with them for the first one.
