Yes, it is exactly what you think it is, and no, your dog does not care. Our Beef Pizzle, better known as a bully stick, is a single air-dried beef pizzle at 20 to 25cm, around half as long again as most you will find, and one of the most loved chews on our stall.

Key features

  • Around half as long again as most. The bully sticks in most shops are 12 to 15cm. Ours are 20 to 25cm and around 80g, so there is a good deal more chew before you need to take the end off them. As a natural product, size and thickness vary.
  • One ingredient. Beef pizzle, air-dried. No additives, no preservatives, no rawhide.
  • Very lean. 79.2% protein and just 3.2% fat, which puts it in our low fat range.
  • A proper chew. Firm and dense, so it is good for a long, happy settle.
  • Great for medium and large dogs. Smaller dogs love them too, with a watchful eye.

Bully stick or pizzle?

They are the same thing. Bully stick is the more common name in the shops, pizzle is what the trade calls it, and both mean a single-ingredient dried beef chew.

Worth knowing

What is a pizzle stick actually made of?

A pizzle is a dried bull's penis. That is it, and we would rather tell you than have you find out later. Nothing added, nothing coated, no filler. Most people are faintly appalled for about ten seconds and then get over it.

Is a pizzle the same as a bully stick?

Yes, identical. Bully stick is the name that caught on in shops because it sounds nicer on a shelf. Pizzle is the older word and the one still used in the trade. You will also see beef sticks, steer sticks and bully bars, all the same chew.

Why are bully sticks more expensive than other chews?

There is only one pizzle per animal, so supply is tighter than it is for ears or tendons. Air-drying takes days rather than hours, and the stick loses a lot of weight along the way. The cheaper ones are usually shorter, 12cm is common, or they have been through a chemical bath to speed the drying up and strip the smell out. Ours are 20 to 25cm and slowly air-dried, and that is most of the difference.

Why do some vets dislike bully sticks?

Two reasons, and neither is a deal breaker. They are calorie dense, so they need counting as part of the day's food rather than an extra on top. And a dog who bolts things whole rather than chewing can try to swallow the last short piece. Take it off them at that point and you have removed most of the risk.

Is there a downside?

The one worth knowing about is how they are dried. Some pizzles are put through a chemical bath to speed things up and take the smell out. Ours are slowly air-dried instead, which is why they smell faintly of beef rather than of nothing at all. If a pizzle has no smell whatsoever, ask what was done to it.

How long does one last?

Two to four days for a small dog, six to twelve hours for a medium one, and ten to twenty minutes for a large dog, given in sessions rather than left down. Plenty of places promise hours for any size. We have watched a lot of dogs and that is not what happens with a Labrador.

Is it a tendon?

No, and this gets repeated a lot, including by people who sell them. A pizzle is muscle. The chew you are thinking of is paddywack, which is a ligament from the neck. Two different products that happen to look similar once dried.
