Paddywack sounds like a nursery rhyme, but your dog will take it very seriously. Our Jumbo Paddywack is a 30cm length of 100% beef neck ligament, air-dried into a tough, chewy stick.

Is paddywack rawhide?

No. Paddywack is the ligament from a cow's neck, simply air-dried. Rawhide is a by-product of the leather trade.

Worth knowing

Swap it out once the last bit is small enough to swallow whole. For a smaller dog, the Braided Tendon is a great alternative.

What is paddywack?

The nuchal ligament, the thick elastic cord running along the top of the neck that helps an animal hold its head up. Ours is beef. Dried out it becomes a firm, slightly rubbery chew that a dog has to work at. You will also see it spelled paddywhack. Same thing.

Is it the same as a bully stick?

No, and this trips people up constantly. A bully stick is muscle. Paddywack is a ligament from a different part of the animal. They dry into a similar shape but behave differently. If your dog demolished one, it does not follow they will demolish the other.

How long does it last?

Around an hour for a small dog, 20 minutes for a medium one, about 5 for a large one. What makes it last is that it is tough and stringy rather than hard and brittle, so a dog cannot crack it and be finished. They have to gnaw, which is the sort of chewing that does them good.

Does it smell?

Barely, and that is one of its quiet advantages. There is very little fat in it, and fat is what carries smell. If you want your dog chewing on the sofa beside you rather than banished to the garden, this is a good pick.

What age can a puppy start?

Around 12 weeks, with you watching. The texture suits teething puppies rather well. There is enough give in it to feel good on sore gums without being hard enough to worry about, which is more than we would say for an antler at that age.
