Pig ears get all the fame, but cow ears are the quiet overachievers. Our Hairy Cow Ears are whole air-dried cow ears with the fur left on, bigger than a pig ear and a lot leaner.

Pack sizes and weights

Most places price cow ears by the bag, so you get a weight and have to guess the count. Ours are counted, with the weight listed as well, so you can compare either way.

Can puppies have cow ears?

Ours are suitable from 12 weeks, with you watching. Ages vary a lot across the shops selling these, so it is worth checking rather than assuming. Twelve weeks is where we are comfortable, and the low fat is part of the reason.

Worth knowing

Cow ears are big, so a small dog may find one hard going. For little mouths, a Hairy Rabbit Ear is the perfect size.

Please supervise your dog while they enjoy this treat, and make sure fresh water is always available. As a natural product, sizes may vary slightly.

Cow ears or pig ears, which is better?

It comes down to fat. A pig's ear runs at 20%. A cow ear is 6.4%, roughly a third of it, which makes it the better everyday option and the safer one for a dog on a diet or with a delicate stomach. A pig ear is richer and dogs often prefer it, but it is a once-a-week treat rather than a habit.

Why do yours have fur on them?

Deliberately. The fur acts as roughage, giving the gut something to work against. It is traditionally fed as a natural wormer, though we would say plainly that it is an addition to a healthy gut rather than a substitute for your vet's worming treatment. Keep doing what your vet advises.

How often can I give one?

Because they are lean, they are more forgiving than a pig's ear, so a couple a week suits most dogs. Count them towards the day's food rather than as an extra on top.

Are there any risks?

The same as any chew, and the same rule fixes most of it. When a dog has worked one down to a small piece, they will often try to swallow the rest whole rather than keep chewing. Take it off them at that point. Supervise, and keep fresh water nearby.

What size dog do they suit?

Medium and large, mostly. A cow ear is noticeably bigger than a pig ear, which is what you want for a Labrador or a collie. For a small dog it is a lot of ear, and a rabbit ear is the better fit.
