What you are actually getting
This is the question the forums argue about, so here is the straight answer. Ours arrive air-dried. Not raw, so nothing needs defrosting and nothing needs to live in the freezer. Not cooked, which matters, because cooking is what makes bone brittle and brittle bone is where all the splintering stories come from. Air-drying takes the moisture out slowly and leaves the bone as it was.
They come whole, hoof and all. They look like what they are.

The trotter is the leaner of the two by a little, and double the weight. An ear is flat and folds, a trotter is solid and has to be worked at.
How much is too much?
One trotter is around 455 kcal, and that is worth knowing before you hand one over. Treats are meant to stay under about a tenth of what a dog eats in a day, and a whole trotter is well past that for most dogs. Treat it as an occasional thing rather than a daily one, and give a smaller dog half.
Worth knowing
It is a firm, bone-in chew, so it suits a dog who gnaws rather than one who bites down hard to crush. Take it away once it is worn down small enough to swallow. There is plenty more like it in our long lasting chews.
