Novel means a protein your dog's immune system has not met often enough to react to, which is why rabbit and venison work so well: almost no commercial food uses them. Camel is the most novel thing we stock, which makes the wrap a genuinely useful option for a dog who has already reacted to the usual list. Turkey is listed honestly as not novel, because it is still poultry and some chicken-sensitive dogs react to it too.

The ones that come up most about this range

What does hypoallergenic actually mean?

Less than you would hope. There is no legal definition for dog treats and no ingredient is allergen free for every dog. What it means in practice is single protein, no grain, no additives, and usually a meat your dog has not eaten much of before. That last part is what does most of the work.

What is a novel protein?

One your dog's immune system has not met often enough to react to. Rabbit, venison, kangaroo and ostrich are novel for most UK dogs because very little commercial food uses them. Chicken and beef are the opposite, which is why they turn up in most sensitivity stories.

My dog reacts to chicken. Is turkey safe?

Often, but it is not a clean break and we would rather say so. Both are poultry and some dogs react to both. If you want certainty, move to a different animal entirely: rabbit, venison, kangaroo or fish.

Is duck hypoallergenic?

Duck is a genuinely different protein from chicken, so it is the swap we suggest most often and it works for most dogs. It is not novel in the way rabbit is, because plenty of foods use it, but it is a sensible first step.

How should I introduce a new protein?

One at a time, a small amount, then wait several days before anything else new. Introducing two together tells you nothing if there is a reaction, and you end up ruling out both.

Is grain free the same as hypoallergenic?

No, and the two get muddled constantly. Grain allergies in dogs are far rarer than protein allergies. Everything here is grain free, but that is not what makes it suitable for a sensitive dog.

Which would you start with?

A rabbit ear, usually. Single ingredient, genuinely novel, cheap enough to test without committing, and most dogs take to it straight away. Worth knowing it is richer than people assume at 21.5% fat, so it is a treat rather than a daily habit.
